Description: This vintage 7 day straight razor set is a tremendous find. It includes all seven razors in excellent condition with their original box. None of the razors appear to have ever been used.
The multi-day razor set pre-dates modern razors and ensured that a razor was always super-keen and ready to use. Such a set gave the convenience of starting the week with an entire set of razors stropped and ready to go. Seven day sets were never common and they were marketed to the well heeled and were generally top of the line pieces. It wasn't something that the average person would ever acquire. Most folks were lucky to own just one or two razors.
Each of the blades in this set was forged from carbon steel and features the "Solinger Wertarbeit" (Solingen Workmanship) mark. The blades are 5/8 and are beautifully thin for a precision shave. There are no nicks, dings or chips. The tang of each razor is marked "AMA Solingen". The spine of each razor is marked with the day of the week. Tang and spine marks are clear and well defined.
The AMA brand appears to have been marketed by GE Betterton of Leatherhead, England. Their razors were generally made by Grah & Plumacher of Solingen, Germany. I have not been able to verify this AMA mark is related to GE Betterton (and obviously, the letters AMA have been used by many companies over the years. These razors seem very consistent with other antique razors made by Grah & Plumacher.
Handle scales appear to be Bakelite. Four (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) have slightly darker, slightly translucent handles, whereas three of the razors (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) have a lighter, non-translucent handle. The "Solingen" font is slightly different between the two varieties of handles. Most likely, this suggests that two sets were combined at some point to create one complete set. The handles are all in good condition, appear to be original, and have no cracks. There is slight warping of some of the handle scales, which is typical for a razor of this age.
The razors are accompanied by a lined wood presentation case. The case is in good condition though shows some wear.
Finding a set like this is exceptionally and it will be a true collector's piece for any shaving enthusiast.
